For over 35 years the Eastside German Language School (EGLS) has been an Eastside community resource for German classes and cultural activities, bringing together people of all ages who are interested in learning German and the traditions and cultures of German-speaking countries. We welcome all levels of learners, from all different backgrounds!
EGLS uses an immersion-based method of teaching, so our students hear the language spoken during play, through music, reading books, crafting art projects, and during events. Older students also use textbooks to hone their skills in grammar and writing.
You will find a class here for every member of your family. EGLS offers an infant playgroup, pre-school, kindergarten, and classes for elementary and middle-school aged kids. There is also an adult class for intermediate speakers.
In addition to learning the verbal and written language, your experience at EGLS includes celebrating traditional German customs and holidays. We celebrate the coming of dark Winter nights by making Lanterns for a traditional “Laternezug”, we leave our shoes out in hopes of goodies (and not a lump of coal!) during our annual visit from St. Nikolaus, and sing at our Weihnachtsfest. We enjoy a costume party for Fasching, and live music and maypole dancers in the spring for Maifest. A German library of books and DVD’s and after-school movies are free during the schoolyear for all students.
